Holly Tornheim, Topographic Tray, 1999, curly maple, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Keith and Susan Tornheim, 2000.46
Holly Tornheim carves each piece of wood to emphasize its natural color and pattern. In Topographic Tray she shaped a piece of curly maple to suggest a landscape of mountains and plains. The shimmering grain flows over the surface, evoking tiny streams of water and contributing to the illusion of a dramatic vista.
