Beyond the Mainstream: Self-taught Artists and the Role of Creativity (RESCHEDULED)

Presented with the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts
November 7, 2017
4:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m.

The mainstream art world amplifies certain artists’ voices, helping shape our understanding of American culture. The self-taught artists featured in SAAM’s collection have historically been excluded from this cultural narrative. Working apart from the mainstream, these artists make art that often shares a personal story and may serve as the only voice they have in the larger world. Their work acts as a lasting record of the struggles and achievements of a diverse public and a testament to the power of creativity. View this collection and pause to enjoy refreshments in the Museum’s beautiful, covered Kogod Courtyard.

Fee: $25 (includes reception)
