What stories do teens across the United States want to share about their communities? Teachers invited students in grades 8-12 to become local storytellers. Students chose their own topics and captured local narratives through a series of photos, videos, and oral histories as part of the Creating Portraits of Community project. This multimedia gallery showcases their creations.
Please note that some interviews and images address sensitive topics, including gun violence and human trafficking. The choice of subject and the views expressed in this gallery are those of the students and not of the Smithsonian Institution or the Smithsonian American Art Museum. All students participated in the project with parental consent.
