About this Car

For many Americans, the station wagon conjures fond memories of family road trips. After the birth of the interstate highway system in the 1950s and before the arrival of cheap air travel, millions of Americans took to the roads for their family vacations. Their vehicle of choice was the spacious station wagon, epitomized by the Ford Country Squire.

Artwork Connection

A backlit station wagon ascending a hillside dotted with trees is part of Elaine Mayes’s Autolandscapes series. In 1971, Mayes received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to photograph the landscape as many Americans saw it—through the window of a moving car.
