About this Car

The yellow Checker taxicab is an instantly recognizable symbol of New York City. Early cabs were painted a variety of colors but, since the late 1960s, the city has required taxis to be painted yellow to cut down on unofficial drivers and make cabs easier to spot.

Artwork Connection

Artist Phillip Evergood was fascinated by New York City and spent time as an art student wandering its streets and sketching scenes of everyday life. In Dowager in a Wheelchair, Evergood contrasts the frenetic pace of the taxis speeding by with the slower pace of an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
