Michael Lee, Armored Crab, 1998, kingwood, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Fleur and Charles Bresler in honor of Kenneth R. Trapp, curator-in-charge of the Renwick Gallery (1995--2003), 2003.60.33
Although Michael Lee's objects are often small, his dramatic carving emphasizes the density and weight of the wood. Armored Crab is carved from kingwood, a very rare, heavy wood from Brazil. The deep lines of the crab's layered armor and curled legs highlight the rich color of this exotic material.
