Jan Yager, Rock Necklace with Ridge, 1987, sterling silver and oxidized gray beach rock, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Lisa S. and Dudley Anderson, 1993.17
In response to the “cold and flat” machine-made jewelry of the 1970s, Jan Yager produced pillow-shaped metal, set with water-polished stones to showcase the “beauty often overlooked . . . [in] our modern lives.” Rock Necklace with Ridge illustrates Yager’s interest in the natural textures and forms that she discovered around her new home in Rhode Island.
Luce Object Quote
“I often feel we are influenced by the landscape of objects with which we daily interact.” Jan Yager, 1985
