Sphere

  • Todd Hoyer, Sphere, 1988, Arizona ash, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Fleur and Charles Bresler, 1998.11.1

The sphere is a recurring theme in Todd Hoyer's work. He enjoys working with its pure form and applies precise details to evoke lines of longitude and latitude. Hoyer carved Suspended Sphere Series from a single piece of wood and then applied different textures to present an illusion of separate pieces precariously balanced.
The sphere … is the heart and soul of my work.” Todd Hoyer, 2003
