Artwork Description

Dr. George Ackerly was artist Thomas Cole's brother-in-law, having married Cole's sister, Sarah. He lived for a time on the western frontier, but in 1825 returned to New York to be near his family. He and Cole remained close friends for years. Ackerly died in 1842.
