Artwork Description

The inclusion of the vice president with the president on the medal's face has become a tradition for second-term inaugural medals. For the 2005 commemorative piece, Gladys Gunzer searched through countless images of President Bush and Vice President Cheney in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet for inspiration for this double portrait. She eventually found several likenesses that she believed suggested a "feeling of looking forward" and based her portraits on these images. (H. Joseph Levine, Official Presidential Inaugural Medals)
