Artwork Description

Herk Van Tongeren began his Serie Metafisica in 1979 after seeing an exhibition of surreal paintings that showed eerie and mystifying human situations. He believed that geometric forms have inherent powers that can produce mystical feelings and lead us to other states of mind. The geometric forms in this piece generate different energies, rhythms, and tensions. The cone looks as though it might roll down the slope, disrupting the balance of the composition. Serie Metafisica VII creates a sense of time as we move our eyes from one object to another, as well as a sense of history as we realize that the forms have been revered since antiquity.
