Artwork Description

In the middle to late 1980s, John McQueen built a number of double-walled baskets such as this. Woven from white ash and osier, or red willow, Untitled resembles the cross section of a living organ, an image that McQueen has strengthened by weaving a network of twigs around the basket to suggest roots or veins. The creative energy of nature and of the artist is equally visible in the dense interweaving of bark and twigs.
