Artwork Description

In 1934, Paul Manship completed a pair of double gates for New York’s Bronx Zoological Gardens. He worked with fifteen assistants to complete the enormous gates, which incorporated twenty-three different animals sculpted in the round. Among the animals were Black-Necked Stork and Flamingo, which Manship later cast in two different sizes. He initially sketched each bird from life, then used stylized decoration and gilding to emphasize its plumage.
