Artwork Description
The staff that Joseph holds refers to his divine selection as the favored suitor of the Virgin Mary. He is often shown holding the Christ child to emphasize his role as protector of his devotees. St. Joseph is the patron saint of several areas throughout Puerto Rico, including Ciales, Gurabo, Luquillo, Peñuelas, and Lares, communities that extend across the island.
