Artwork Description

During the civil rights era, artists often used whatever materials they had at hand to craft public messages about pressing concerns. Here an unidentified artist emblazons a pro-labor message on recycled computer paper, calling for the boycott of Gallo Wines. Activists on college campuses were especially known for using this unconventional paper for their printmaking. The artist depicts a revolting rat, a symbol of nonunion workers who cross the picket line.

En la época de los derechos civiles, a menudo los artistas utilizaban cualquier material que tuviesen a mano para elaborar mensajes públicos acerca de temas urgentes. Aquí, un artista no identificado escribe un mensaje en pro de los trabajadores sobre papel de impresora reciclado, para hacer un llamado por el boicot de la empresa Gallo Wines. Los activistas de los recintos universitarios eran especialmente conocidos por utilizar este tipo de papel no convencional para sus grabados. El artista ilustra una rata repugnante, un símbolo de los trabajadores no miembros del sindicato que cruzan las líneas de piquetes.
