Artwork Description

Immigrant farmers from Europe brought the art of wheat weaving to North America in the 1700s. According to tradition, creating decorative wreaths out of wheat straw would ensure a bountiful harvest. Growing up on her parents’ ranch in Le Grand, California, Donna Hall discovered the craft at a young age. This piece, which illustrates her love of flowers, is one of many straw weavings she has entered in California State Fair competitions since 2002. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, it won Best in Division (straw art) at the 2022 fair.
