Jonathan Borofsky’s monumental sculpture, “Man with a Briefcase,” newly acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, will be installed permanently outside the museum’s building at the corner of 7th and G streets N.W. The steel sculpture—nearly 27 feet high and one of the largest artworks in the museum’s collection—has become an iconic silhouette in contemporary art.

Borofsky is an internationally acclaimed artist famed for combining surrealism, conceptualism and figurative representations and for his large-scale sculptures. The silhouette of a man dressed in a suit and hat and carrying a briefcase is a recurring theme in Borofsky’s work, representing the archetypal “everyman.” Throughout his career, Borofsky has created numerous versions of “Man with a Briefcase” in various sizes and different media that have been housed in major museums and institutions and around the world. This is the first sculpture by Borofsky to enter the museum’s collection.

Media do not need prior permission to photograph the work.
