In anticipation of the exhibition 40 under 40: Craft Futures, on view at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum from July 20, 2012 – February 3, 2013, the museum asked the 40 artists featured to share personal videos of themselves with our audience. Here's what Chrisy Oates submitted—enjoy! Christy Oates Social Media Video, 2012 Digital video, color, sound, 0:58 Courtesy of the artist
CHRIST OATES: Hi, I’m Christy Oates. I’m an artist in San Diego. My work is inspired by combining CAD software and CNC machines with traditional woodworking techniques and questions where the boundaries of art and manufacturing meet. I use a laser cutter to create my folding furniture and laser marquetry.
I’m very excited to be part of the Renwick Gallery’s “40 Under 40” show, and in honor of the event I’m going to laser engrave the gallery’s logo into my hand. Don’t try this at home.
40 under 40 artist Christy Oates pushes the boundaries of craft, using lasers to cut the plywood pieces of her furniture. Oates demonstrates her process and discusses the challenges and techniques involved in her work.
