In anticipation of the exhibition 40 under 40: Craft Futures, on view at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum from July 20, 2012 -- February 3, 2013, the museum asked the 40 artists featured to share personal videos of themselves with our audience. Here's what Shawn Smith submitted—enjoy! Shawn Smith Social Media Video, 2012 Digital video, color, sound, 1:02 Courtesy of the artist
SHAWN SMITH: Hi, my name is Shawn Smith. I live in Austin, Texas, and my work is about losing touch with nature. I’ve lived in big cities my whole life, so I really don’t have much first hand experience with nature.
I’m very interested in how images are translated through computer screens. I take two-dimensional images of nature and translated them into three-dimensional pixilated objects. For this show I’ve created a 3D pixilated campfire. I’m very excited and very honored to be part of the show, so in honor of that I decided to go camping. So here I am camping for the first time.
Did you guys hear that? Is that like a wolf? Wow. Okay. I’m gonna make some traditional camping cuisine. I’ve got a s’more recipe here. Got my sticks, got my marshmallows, and I’m just gonna roast ‘em here for a little while. I’m not sure how long I’m supposed to be doing this. You’re supposed to add some chocolate here, so I’ll add a little chocolate as I’m roasting.
