Artwork Description
John Gellatly was a New York City art collector who gave his extensive collection to the Smithsonian Institution in 1929, a large part of which resides in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Gellatly focused heavily on American art, although he had a diverse collection. His favorite artists included Abbott Thayer, Thomas Dewing, and Albert Pinkham Ryder, from whom he purchased seventeen paintings.
