Elaborate Layers

  • Jane Sauer, Elaborate Layers, 1985, waxed linen thread and acrylic paint, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Eleanor T. and Samuel J. Rosenfeld, 2002.8.13

Luce Center Label

Jane Sauer refers to herself as a "sculptural basketmaker," feeling that her work is more about form, color, and meaning than its ability to act as a container. She makes her baskets from coils of waxed linen thread molded around Styrofoam to help the material keep its shape. Because of her training as a painter, color is very important to Sauer and she uses a range of hues to create a particular mood for each work.
