Portrait of a New York Lady

  • George Linen, Portrait of a New York Lady, ca. 1840, oil on canvas mounted on aluminum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum purchase, 1979.151.2

Luce Center Label

George Linen made this painting of a well-bred woman, stylishly coiffed and dressed in a fur-trimmed robe, as a pendant to her husband’s portrait. The lady looks in the direction of her husband, with a sweet smile that conveys a warm intimacy, as though she might reach out and touch her husband’s hand as they sat for their portraits.
