Sailing Ship--off Coast of Maine

  • William E. Norton, Sailing Ship--off Coast of Maine, 1876, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Alice H. Rossin, 1982.1.33

Luce Center Label

William E. Norton lived in Boston but spent a great deal of time painting on the coast of Maine. Maine Coast has broad brushstrokes and little detail, suggesting that Norton created it “on the spot” as a study for a more finished work such as Sailing Ship, which was probably painted back in his studio.
