John Nelson created the geometric shapes on the surface of this teapot by applying layers of gray and black glaze. The patterns echo the vessel’s form, from the ridges in the curved handle to the rectangular panels around the body. The wide base and handle over the top recall Japanese ceramic traditions, but the octagonal shape and abstract decoration add a fresh twist to the conventional design.
