Artwork Description

Henry Brintnell Bounetheau copied this mysterious work from an engraving by William Nicholas, an English watercolorist, etcher, and lithographer. Nicholas in turn based his image on the painting Beautiful Woman, Unmasked by Mrs. Pierson. Conservation of this miniature was made possible through a generous grant provided by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee.
