  • Ella Fitzgerald Turns 100: Five Questions with Vocalist Sharón Clark

    On April 25, 1917, one of the most iconic vocalists of our time was born—Ella Fitzgerald. This year, the world celebrates the centennial of the "First Lady of Song" and the legacy Ella left behind. For the eighth year in a row, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will fill its Kogod Courtyard with a celebration of her music on Saturday, April 29.

    On March 9 from 5:30-7 p.m, The Galaxy Electric, a psychedelic pop band filled with bossa nova and tribal rhythms, will play at the Luce Foundation Center's Luce Unplugged. In partnership with D.C. Music Download, this free, monthly concert series features the best of D.C.'s local music scene.
  • Luce Artist Talk: Five Questions with Kathryn Thibault

    Each month, we partner with our neighbors up the street at Flashpoint Gallery to present our local artist talk series. This month, Kathryn Lynch Thibault joins us to talk about her most recent exhibition and works that inspire her in our Luce Foundation Center. Thibault works across media forms, creating pieces that are not only personal to her, but also challenge how the viewer thinks about common, everyday objects and gestures. Luce Artist Talks are presented in collaboration with CulturalDC.

Eye Level recently sat down with Renwick curators Nicholas Bell (The Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator-in-Charge) and Nora Atkinson (Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft) to talk about the museum's renovation, the intersection of craft and technology, and what the future holds.
  • Luce Unplugged: Five Questions (plus one) with Jules Hale

    If you missed our recent Luce Unplugged, you still have a chance to catch one this fall. Next Thursday, November 5th at 6 p.m. Den-Mate will play a Luce Unplugged set. There will also be a pre-show discussion of the artist's favorite Luce artwork.

  • Luce Artist Talk: Five Questions with Rachel Schmidt

    Luce Artist Talks presents Rachel Schmidt, whose exhibit, Forgotten Futures, tells the futuristic fairy tale of the last elephant. On Saturday, June 20th, Rachel will be in the Luce Foundation Center to talk about the exhibition, her other works, and the connections she sees between her work and artworks on view in Luce.
  • Five Questions: DC Jazz Composers Collective

    The American Art Museum's monthly concert series, Take 5!, brings one of America's original art forms—jazz—to the stage every third Thursday. On June 18th, the DC Jazz Composers Collective, will play new works they composed for this performance taking inspiration from our collection.

    Local singer/songwriter Tomás Pagán Motta, who released his debut solo album earlier this year, will at our Luce Unplugged on June 11th. His cozy, mellow vocals are certainly a perfect fit for the acoustics in our space. Tomás is busy preparing for a tour this fall, but took some time to answer a few questions for us.
