Artwork Description
Kenyon Cox made a series of studies of nude, fleshy women posed in green fields. He evaded the charge of indecency by casting his nudes in poetic roles, which took them from everyday life into the world of myth. But his audiences continued to object, and Cox retaliated by complaining that the American public simply “misunderstood” high art, a feeling shared by other members of his artistic circle.
