Artwork Description

The American Society for Testing and Materials was established in 1898 by engineers and scientists who sought solutions for breaks in rail lines. The work of the society led to the standardization of steel production for railroad construction. Today the society is known as ASTM International. Research has not revealed the meaning of the inscription at the feet of the allegorical figure in Joseph Renier’s design.
