Artwork Description

This elegantly dressed young man sat for this miniature on January 1, 1867. The artist used the edges of the ivory as a palette, and when the painting is viewed without its frame, you can see all the test strokes of paint. Conservation of this miniature was made possible through a generous grant provided by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee.
