Artwork Description

By 1941, Moses had stopped copying other people's compositions, but she sourced details, such as people and buildings, from newspaper and magazine clippings. In this sense, her paintings are like collages, recombining and transforming printed elements.

Some modern artists of the day drew on similar sources and ideas, working with collaged or repeated image fragments to evoke a world beyond the painted surface. The vivid coloration and visible brushstrokes of In Harvest Time also call to mind Vincent van Gogh's paintings of harvest time in the French countryside.
