Biography

Kiyomi Iwata uses fabrics to create objects that express her Japanese heritage as well as her experience of living in the United States. Iwata’s silk and organza boxes relate to the kimono, traditionally used to wrap and conceal the body, while the metal thread conjures images of American technology. When Iwata sets out to make one of her objects, she tries to empty her mind of all thoughts and emotions. She finds that listening to classical music helps her to pour all of her energies into crafting these evocative pieces.
