In anticipation of the exhibition 40 under 40: Craft Futures, on view at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum from July 20, 2012 -- February 3, 2013, the museum asked the 40 artists featured to share personal videos of themselves with our audience. Here's what Matt Moulthrop submitted—enjoy! Matt Moulthrop Social Media Video, 2012 Digital video, color, sound, 1:05 Videography by Sonar Creative, Inc. Courtesy of the artist
MATT MOULTHROP: When I found out I was being added to the Renwick it was very exciting, and a very proud moment, and it really validated the work that I was doing. My father was particularly proud of this accomplishment because he really wants to see me succeed, and although my grandfather wasn’t around to see this, it was particularly special because both of them have work already in the Renwick, and I’ll be the third generation of my family to have work in the permanent collection.
The material I work with is natural and I can’t enhance or add anything to what’s given to me, it’s more of a revealing process than anything else, and I have to uncover what’s there and reveal it in the best way, and that’s part of the artistry and challenge of working with natural material, such as wood.
It’s going to be exciting to see how the careers of the 40 artists in the exhibition grow from this point. Everyone is really talented and it’s a great honor to be included with everyone.
