Artwork Description

Caleb Fiske Harris was a New York businessman and avid collector of books. He commissioned Hiram Powers to create this sculpture in 1867, along with a portrait of his wife, Emily Stevenson Davis Harris. After his death, his extensive library was acquired by his alma mater, Brown University, and is still considered one of the best private book collections in the United States.
