Paul Manship, John Johansen Portrait Medal (reverse), 1959, bronze, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Bequest of Paul Manship, 1966.47.119
Paul Manship created several medals of artists such as this one showing painter John C. Johansen (1876-1964), who was born in Denmark and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Johansen established his reputation as a painter of tonalist and impressionist landscapes. On the reverse, Manship dedicated the medal to Johansen in friendship, as he had done for many painters and sculptors throughout his career.
