Polkadot Necklace No. 6

  • Ramona Solberg, Polkadot Necklace No. 6, 1996, sterling silver, leather, and dominoes, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Libby Cooper, 1998.1

Luce Center Label

Ramona Solberg is drawn to the color and stark geometry of old game pieces. She finds used dominoes particularly attractive and includes them in many of her works. The artist selects for her jewelry the objects that have been “worn, handled, treasured, and traded by ordinary people from all cultures” and hopes that her pieces will continue to be used in this way.

Luce Object Quote

“I have a terrible time passing up any sort of game pieces, old compasses or miniature tools—pieces with a past or an intrinsic symbolism.” Artist quoted in Adornment Newsletter, Fall 2001
