Laura Dreyfus Barney, Portrait of Ellen Goin Rionda, 1898, cast and patinated plaster, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Mme. Yvonne Guehennec and Mr. William E. Huntington, 1976.153.20
Ellen Goin Rionda was the wife of a wealthy sugarcane importer, whose philanthropy included a housing development on their estate for young married couples. Laura Dreyfus Barney caught the sitter at a moment when she gazes off to the side. It seems that something or someone has caught her attention, or perhaps she is deep in thought.
