Artwork Description

Paul Manship’s medal honors Elbert Gary (1846-1927), who founded the United States Steel Corporation in 1901, and after whom the city of Gary, Indiana, is named. Elbert Gary’s profile appears on the obverse, while on the reverse the classical figure of Vulcan at his forge symbolizes the steel industry.
