Artwork Description

Manship created Sketch of Egyptian Jackals while touring Egypt in 1924. In this drawing, he mimicked the outline drawing technique of ancient Egypt in order to capture the jackals he found on tomb decorations in Cairo. These animals are associated with the afterlife in Egyptian mythology because Anubis, the god of the dead, is often depicted with the head of a jackal.
