Artwork Description

In 2004, woodworker Douglas Finkel had made approximately thirty-six "source benches," many of which were inspired by Asian and African designs. The African influence is particularly evident in this Source Bench, which Finkel created in 1999. The tapering curves of the platform and the repeated geometric design in the base recall headrests from West and Central Africa. Finkel's work is inspired by French designer Pierre-Emile Legrain (1889–1929), who introduced these African forms to Western culture in the 1920s.
