Artwork Description

Paul Manship's Jeanne d'Arc medal was created to benefit the Italian War Relief Committee and shows Joan of Arc (1412-1431) dressed in armor and riding into battle in the Hundred Years' War. Above her, an angel bearing a sword represents the faith that enabled the "Maid of Orleans" to conquer her enemies. A rippling banner bears the fleurs-de-lis, symbol of the Dauphin of France, later Charles VII, whom Joan supported against the English.
