Artwork Description

George Catlin remembered this man as “an ill-natured and insolent fellow who has since been killed for some of his murderous deeds.” Great Cloud probably sat for this portrait in Washington, D.C., in January 1831. (Catlin, Letters and Notes, vol. 2, no. 52, 1841; reprint 1973)
